Taking the central challenge suggested by the 2013’s edition of the Lisbon

Architecture Triennale — But is it architecture? —, we propose to organize a single event that would present and launch this project, promoting a discussion of the editorial culture of Portuguese periodical press on architecture. To what extent could the “site” of discourse be regarded as an architectural “site”? And, under a reversed perspective: are the architectural “site” limits redrawn, fixed or transgressed by the “site” of the discourse?

Using The Coin as a point of entry, this workshop will ask participants to imagine this world from an object’s perspective. Introducing a set of exploratory questions and practical exercises, it will help participants enter the logic of such a projection from the inside out. Here we introduce our primary concern – Just how much autonomy do we really want objects to have?

JA team is working on site at The Institute Effect in an open newsroom! Come watch the work in progress!

30 Nov, 15:00
Presentation & talk: Presentation of the critical report on the Institute Effect activities, followed by a talk with Joaquim Moreno and debate.

Owned by Ordem dos Arquitectos (OA) and published since 1981, Jornal Arquitectos (JA) (PT), is a seminal and influential Portuguese architecture journal, the editorial outlet of professional architects in Portugal. A beacon of freedom of opinion and critical autonomy, the editorship is awarded through an open call.
Jornal Arquitectos (JA), the last institute of The Institute Effect, proposes to continue with the task it has always set out to do: research and report on reality as it is. The editorial team of the Portuguese architecture magazine, JA, will undertake a “forensic analysis” of each institute’s previous activities, debriefing and disclosing what has taken place, to make an inhouse and hands-on periodical. A kind of “cadavre exquis”, the pamphlet will mirror the multiple agents that have contributed to The Institute Effect. Yet, JA stays committed to its style. No fancy concepts, nor strange formats. True to the ethos of journalism, what you see is what you get. “That’s the Press, Baby” are the famous last words of Humphrey Bogart in Deadline USA (1952), a movie about reporters and freedom of press.

A public wash-in was held in Sydney in November this year.
Participants brought their laundry to the park and joined others in washing it by hand. The clean washing was hung on a network of lines to dry, creating a series of smaller, semi-private "rooms" - places where individuals and groups waited, met and chatted while their washing dried.

This event was filmed and the footage has come to Lisbon to be screened as a part of the Lisbon Architecture Triennale.
The installation is open to the public - children and families are welcome.

The installation celebrates with an utopia-monument the social movements that took place in the winter of 2013 in São Paulo. It reactivates one of the primary functions of architecture, that of remembering a crucial historical event. The narrative of architecture and the form of utopia was used to tell the story of a possible future that those movements could have generated: a auto-da-fé (collective destruction) mechanistic and the birth of a bustling society through culture and art.

Theater of Interruptions: Rehearsal for an Unfinished History (Portugal) reenacts moments of disjunction and contradiction within Portuguese history. The goal is to provoke, interrupt, and question the concept of the nation, and what remains of our democracy in the present context of austerity measures and the “counter-
revolution.” It is constituted by a series of performative reenactments that form the basis of a film within a film about Portugal as the protagonist of a tale of globalization.
