A Moeda (The Coin), Jared Hawkey, Sofia Oliveira, 2013 © Andrew Tonks, London Metropolitan University, Pure Mathematics / STORMProject by: CADA: Jared Hawkey (UK), Sofia Oliveira (PT)
Date: 03.12 – 04.12.13; 10.12 – 11.12.13 | Tue - Sun: 14h - 17h
Category: Workshop
Address: Trienal de Arquitectura de Lisboa, Campo de Santa Clara 142 – 145, 1100-474 LisboaA Moeda (The Coin) is a digital artifact that wants to travel around the world. A semi-autonomous object passed between human hosts, on a journey defined by a desire to eventually return home. Influenced by a combination of individual, social and geophysical forces, hosts are left to wonder how much of its movement is defined by their behaviour or the coin’s free will.
The Coin presents a model where humans are vehicles for coins, and coins are vehicles for humans.
This begs the question – How do we envision a world where humans and objects have an equal claim on existence?
Using The Coin as a point of entry, this workshop will ask participants to imagine this world from an object’s perspective. Introducing a set of exploratory questions and practical exercises, it will help participants enter the logic of such a projection from the inside out. Here we introduce our primary concern – Just how much autonomy do we really want objects to have?
Palácio Sinel de Cordes, Campo de Santa Clara 142-145
Inscriptions: http://www.cada1.net/?p=319 Workshop is free. Registration is obligatory until 9 December 2013

It is almost empty with less than 20 inhabitants and most of the capsules are abandoned, decaying and forgot- ten. Metabolism's biggest icon is now indifferent. This circularity tries to embrace the territory in all its diversity. The exhibition places culture at the centre of the debate, as the key principle for reclaiming geography, mobility and social equality.

The communal washing of clothes was celebrated in the Portuguese film “Aldeia da Roupa Branca” in 1938. As a response to the transitional conditions between the public and private territory, a public wash-in will take place on a day during Close, Closer. The participants just need to bring their laundry to the event and join others in washing it by hand. By being hung on the line network to dry, the laundry gradually creates a series of smaller semi-private places within the larger public space. The day concludes with the screening of the film.

The urban experience of contemporary Australian cities, while consistent with many modern metropolises, is uniquely different in terms of their relationship to the scale and breadth of the continental mass of Australia. These cities are ghosted by an interior, both real and imagined, that is only occasionally occupied, forming a relationship that is simultaneously spatial and philosophical. Ghost Cities will reimagine an urban condition for the interior that speculates on the vast material wealth contained within the Australian continent.

Based on the traditional narrative of azulejos (tiles) and partfunded by crowdfunding platform Kickstarter, this project proposes a method of collective storytelling through the temporary recladding of a building’s facade. The process begins with the collection of photographs from the public, which are printed onto 150×150mm ceramic tiles. Collectively, the images construct a replica of the building that they envelop, inviting the public to take a closer look.

This Super8 film installation by architecture students of Seville University investigates the contradictory destruction intrinsic to an archival process. It reflects their drive to “destroy” buildings of a historically significant part of their city, using a circle of images set in motion by a light-intensive projection apparatus that both brings them to life and accelerates their destruction.

In an effort to question the function and reuse of space in the city, Symbiosis – closer space, closer community – opens up a series of places across Lisbon, inviting a completely different group of users to interact and reevaluate them. A testing ground for urban symbiosis – embracing social, spatial, economic and mental strata – the notion of inaccessible buildings, immune to the problems and needs of others on a daily basis, is potentially transformed into more democratic, multi-use spaces.

Theater of Interruptions (PT)
Rehearsal for an Unfinished History reenacts moments of disjunction & contradiction within Portuguese history. We aim to provoke, interrupt, & question the concept of the nation, & what remains of our democracy in the present context of austerity & the “counter-revolution.” We present a series of reenactments that form the basis of a film within a film, about Portugal as the protagonist of a tale of globalization.

The (New) Book of Questions (MX)
Project by: Evangelina Guerra Luján (MX)
Category: Installation / Exhibition / Publication
In 1974, Pablo Neruda published his best-seller The Book of Questions. Based on that, the project, The (New) Book of Questions is founded to observe and question the territories we live in. These questions will lead authors and readers into the realm of further observation and, if lucky, further questioning. The aim of this book is to become a device or tool to think, observe and question space, city, landscape and territories. -

This exhibition examine a Lisbon unknown to the tourist’s eye.
Courtyards, gardens or simply back courtyards, private or semi-public spaces, represented throughout the different phases of urban planning, are a fundamental part of residential architecture. Behind the facades, it is the city that hides itself from the outside world that is intended to be exposed and questioned in this poetic exhibition born of a collaboration between an architect, landscape architect and a sociologist. -

Taking the central challenge suggested by the 2013’s edition of the Lisbon
Architecture Triennale — But is it architecture? —, we propose to organize a single event that would present and launch this project, promoting a discussion of the editorial culture of Portuguese periodical press on architecture. To what extent could the “site” of discourse be regarded as an architectural “site”? And, under a reversed perspective: are the architectural “site” limits redrawn, fixed or transgressed by the “site” of the discourse?

The Space Between Words (CZ)
The Space Between Words (sketch), Markéta Magidová, 2013 © Markéta MagidováProject by: Markéta Magidová (CZ)Date: 14.09.2013 | Everyday: 10h - 22hCategory: InstallationAddress: Jardim Botto Machado, Campo de Santa Clara, LisboaThis site-specific installation explores the topography of written text , where the spatiality of the text and of the act of reading escapes from layouts of books. A sentence is placed in a part of Lisbon to create a kind of a hybrid city-text structure. The gaps between words are not empty, but filled with blocks of houses, by people living in them. As you walk the streets and read the sentence, the gaps disturb the meaning of the words, subvert the sense of the text: a narrator describes an important point in a plot, the hero seems to be closer to understanding what has happened.

The plot is disclosed through a series of artefacts, designed to serve as evidence in its fictional retelling within a court of law. Like a performance, the assistants will fabricate the artefacts, dictated by explicit design guides. The objects become evidence of the aforementioned crime, as well as the original exhibition.

“Cuba will count as having the most beautiful academy of arts in the world.” - Fidel Castro (1961)
Cuba's ambitious National Art Schools project, designed by three young artists in the wake of Castro's Revolution, is neglected, nearly forgotten, then ultimately rediscovered as a visionary architectural masterpiece. In 1961, three young, visionary architects were commissioned by Fidel Castro and Che Guevara to create Cuba's National Art Schools on the grounds of a former golf course in Havana, Cuba. Construction of their radical designs began immediately and the school's first classes soon followed. Dancers, musicians and artists from all over the country reveled in the beauty of the schools, but as the dream of the Revolution quickly became a reality, construction was abruptly halted and the architects and their designs were deemed irrelevant in the prevailing political climate. Forty years later the schools are in use, but remain unfinished and decaying. Castro has invited the exiled architects back to finish their unrealized dream. Unfinished Spaces features intimate footage of Fidel Castro, showing his devotion to creating a worldwide showcase for art, and it also documents the struggle and passion of three revolutionary artists. -

Recently, there have been new creative dynamics which, through small interventions in public space, ephemeral or temporary, are introducing a new perspective on what the city and urban life are. This lecture intends to debate these recent urban interventions and their importance in the current context of urban development as well as the relationship between public space, public sphere, art and architecture.

Each movement will create noise when performed in one of the pavilions, but when performed simultaneously a melody is created and the pavilions are connected.

An investigation into the historical and contemporary construction of “Architecture” as a concept by surveying and collecting aphorisms that declare quite literally what “Architecture” is. Resulting in an ideological and hermeneutical map of its highly expansive and deviant terrain, the exhibition contrasts over 500 aphorisms from the past 2,000 years with an ongoing, open-source that asks the participant quite simply “what is architecture?” In addition to answers collected in situ of the Triennale, the website will aggregate proclamations of meaning from anyone using the Twitter hashtag #ArchitectureIs to form a networked cartography of architectural consciousness.
